People in blogging make $100,000s every year in affiliate sales and in ad revenue. The problem is that to make either of those income streams work… you need traffic. And traffic, for someone just getting started, isn’t easy to build up straightaway. So, in my opinion, the best way to make money quickly is to create your own digital product…
Why Digital Products?
There are many reasons why creating a your own product is better than other income streams available to you:
- ALL profit is yours.
- Digital products cost nothing to deliver or create. You get 100% profit on the sale.
- As well as your website, you can sell digital products in online marketplaces like Etzy and Creative Market (you don’t even need a blog or website to get started selling!);
- It is a secure income stream – your product is owned by you and cannot be taken away (third-party affiliate programs you might have invested time into may shut without notice);
- You can use them to establish authority in your field;
- With focus, they can be produced quickly. A product in the $7 – $47 field could be produced over a weekend;
- There is a high upper-limit on what people will pay for digital products. Online courses sell from $97 – $997 depending on the field, depth and duration of the course.
There is no business on earth easier to get into. You can make a digital product with nothing other than a laptop and internet connection and sell it online again, and again, and again. You have no stock to buy, no premises to maintain, no staff to pay! 🙂
Sure, if you have a blog, there is a modest cost for hosting, but if you sell it on Etzy you might pay a $2 fee for a 6 month listing fee. Just two dollars! Imagine starting a business for $4 a year! Well, that’s the reality right now, so seize it while you can. Wow! What a wonderful time to be alive!
How do I make them?
Anyone can make a simple digital product. You can make digital products in Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, and then export the finished document as a PDF. Next, type a description of your product into Etzy, upload the PDF as a product link, and BOOM – you’ve got an income stream that’s open 24/7. You can add it to you blog (if you have one) and then you have two places customers can find this product.
Microsoft Word and Powerpoint
It is difficult to make a product look good if it is made with Powerpoint or Word. Not impossible, just difficult. And frankly, grappling with the difficulty is needless, given there are much, much better tools out there to help you put together a digital document. Canva is one of them AND IT IS FREE.
I would say that Canva is a tool you *have* to learn to use if you want to make money though blogging. It is an online graphic design package and a page editor in one, and it creates brilliant designs with minimum effort.I’m not claiming it is as accomplished as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, but I find those Adobe products too hard for everyday use. I spend ages on photoshop looking for a certain function, and I find it frustrating. Canva has exactly the right balance of ease-of-use and creative brilliance. I find it really enhances my work and makes graphic design as easy as it could possibly be. If you’ve ever looked at other blogs and seen amazing graphics on all their posts and pages, chances are, they’re using Canva. It is a blogger’s dream. As I said earlier, it is free, although there is a pro version which I do recommend you get as soon as you are making money. You don’t need it the pro version straightaway.
Write about something you know.
It is best if you write about something you know. Something you can sell on your blog. If you are struggling, take the time to look for a subject and research it. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can master a subject – or at least write a beginners’ book about!
If it is a eBook – and most digital products are – type it up in word and present the text in Canva. A nicely presented product will sell more copies at a higher price. People do judge a eBook by its cover.
A friend of mine was charging $7.99 for her eBook. I recommended that she present it in Canva. I helped her out with the design. She now sells the Ebook for $47. Customer feedback is as good as ever. She sells pretty much the same number, but now she is making almost $40 per sale more! Profit has gone through the roof. That is an awful lot of money. The lesson is: don’t scrimp on presentation, or you’ll leave money on the table.
You can buy eBook Canva Templates for your digital product on this website. These are templates designed by us that you can simply drop your text in, replace our images (if you wish) and then export your creation as a PDF to sell. You can transform a simple Word document into a stunning eBook. We offer Workbook templates too, that you can use to create a product that might accompany the eBook.
Take Athena theme for instance:
The design is done for you. You just open Canva (it’s free) and swap the example text for your text. That’s it! If you like, you can change the example pictures for your own ones. You can also resize and move things about on the page.
- Your customers won’t know you have bought the design.
- It looks highly professional.
- You can increase the price of your product as the value is now perceived to be greater.
